BUILDING PRODUCTS RANGE

Building Products

Big River Group supplies a broad range of building products that complement our core timber and panel ranges – from internal and external doors to insulation, builders hardware and NCC-compliant fire doors. These are the products that complete a build: the items specifiers and site managers need alongside structural framing, flooring and cladding.

All building products are available for trade pickup or delivery from our national location network, giving builders a single supplier for the full material schedule rather than splitting orders across multiple vendors.

GUIDE

How to Choose the Right Building Products

Doors – Internal, External and Fire-Rated

Door selection starts with application. Standard internal doors are typically hollow-core for weight and cost efficiency, while external entry doors require solid-core construction with weather seals and hardware rated for exposure. Fire doors are a compliance item – the NCC requires fire-resistant doorsets tested to AS 1905.1 in any wall with a required Fire Resistance Level. Fire doors must be supplied, installed and maintained as a complete certified doorset including frame, seals, hinges and closer. Mixing components from different manufacturers voids the certification.

Insulation and NCC Energy Compliance

The NCC 2022 raised minimum thermal performance to 7 stars under NatHERS, which has increased R-value requirements across all climate zones. Ceiling insulation in most zones now needs R5.0 or higher, and wall insulation requirements have moved to R2.5–R2.7 for standard framed construction. Insulation type matters too – glasswool batts suit most wall and ceiling applications, while rigid board products are required for slab edge and underfloor situations. Your Big River location team can advise on the R-values required for your specific climate zone and construction type.

Builders Hardware and Door Furniture

Hardware quality directly affects long-term building performance. Hinges, handles, locks and closers are high-use components – undersized or low-grade hardware leads to sagging doors, worn finishes and callback costs. For door hardware on fire-rated doorsets, every component must be tested as part of the certified assembly. Specify hardware from the doorset manufacturer’s approved schedule rather than substituting aftermarket fittings.

Sourcing Building Products Through a Single Supplier

Splitting material orders across multiple suppliers creates procurement overhead, delivery coordination problems and increased risk of site delays. Big River’s building products range is stocked alongside our structural timber, plywood, cladding and flooring – so a single order and a single delivery covers the full material schedule. Talk to your local location team about project-based supply packages.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What fire rating do internal doors need to comply with the NCC?

The NCC requires fire doors in walls with a Fire Resistance Level to comply with AS 1905.1. The standard FRL for most fire doors is –/60/30 (60 minutes integrity, 30 minutes insulation). Fire doors in fire walls may require higher ratings. The door must be tested and certified as a complete doorset – leaf, frame, seals and hardware – not assembled from separate components.

What R-value insulation do I need for a new home in Australia?

R-value requirements depend on your NCC climate zone. Under the NCC 2022 7-star provisions, most zones require ceiling insulation of R5.0 or above and wall insulation of R2.5–R2.7 for standard framed construction. Slab edge insulation is mandatory in climate zones 7 and 8, and for any slab with in-slab heating. Contact your Big River location for zone-specific guidance.

What is the difference between a fire door and a smoke door?

Fire doors are tested to AS 1905.1 and resist the passage of fire for a rated period, measured by integrity and insulation criteria. Smoke doors are designed to resist the passage of smoke at 200°C for 30 minutes. The NCC may require both in the same building depending on the fire compartment design. Smoke door leaves must swing in both directions or in the direction of travel and cannot be sliding doors or roller shutters.

Can I buy building supplies from a Big River location without a trade account?

Big River locations serve both trade account holders and general customers. A trade account provides benefits including competitive pricing, credit terms, a dedicated account manager and streamlined ordering. Contact your nearest location or call 1300 88 1958 to discuss account options.

Why does hardware on fire doors need to be from the same certified doorset?

Under AS 1905.1, a fire door is tested and certified as a complete assembly – the leaf, frame, seals, hinges, closer and lock must all be part of the tested configuration. Substituting hardware that was not included in the original test invalidates the certification, even if the replacement components appear identical. Always specify hardware from the doorset manufacturer’s approved schedule.
