FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How to choose the right MGP Grade?

Machine-graded pine (MGP) is graded to AS 1748, with the grade reflecting minimum stiffness and strength properties. MGP10 is the standard grade for most residential wall framing and roof truss applications. MGP12 is specified where greater stiffness is required – such as floor joists and lintels over wider openings. MGP15 is available for specialist applications requiring the highest stiffness rating. Your Big River location team can advise on the appropriate grade for your project.

Treated vs Untreated Framing

The NCC and AS 1604 require treated framing in termite-risk areas and in applications with moisture exposure risk.

H2 treated framing (including H2-S blue-stained pine) is specified for internal above-ground use in termite-risk zones.

Untreated framing is suitable in low-risk areas as permitted by the NCC. Always confirm the required treatment level for your project location before specifying.

Sizing and Specification

Big River framing timber is available in depths from 70mm to 290mm, widths of 35mm and 45mm, and lengths up to 6m. Sizing selection should follow the span tables in AS 1684 for the relevant framing application. Our teams can assist with span table references and sizing confirmation for wall frames, floor joists, roof rafters and other framing elements.

Australian Standards and Compliance

All framing timber supplied by Big River is manufactured to AS/NZS 1748 and designed for use in accordance with AS 1684 (residential timber framed construction) and AS/NZS 1720 (timber structures). Treated products meet the requirements of AS 1604.

This ensures your structural timber products meet recognised industry requirements for residential and commercial construction.
