GUIDE

How to Choose the Right Cabinets & Benchtops

Choosing the Right Substrate

The substrate choice depends on the component being built. MDF is the standard for cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and routed profiles – its uniform density machines cleanly and takes paint, vinyl wrap, or 2-pac finishes without telegraphing grain. Particleboard (often melamine-faced) is the workhorse for carcasses, shelving, and internal components where cost efficiency and dimensional stability matter. For benchtop substrates, HMR (High Moisture Resistant) particleboard at 33mm is the industry standard, providing a stable base for laminate or post-formed surfaces in kitchens and laundries.

Moisture Resistance Grades

Standard MDF and particleboard are suitable for dry interior applications – wardrobes, office furniture, and general storage. For kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries, specify MR (Moisture Resistant) MDF or HMR particleboard. These boards use moisture-resistant resins that reduce swelling when exposed to humidity or occasional wetting. Standard boards in wet-adjacent applications will swell at exposed edges and around hardware fixings, leading to premature failure.

Formaldehyde Emission Classes

Australian-made MDF and particleboard are tested for formaldehyde emissions under AS/NZS 4266. E1 is the baseline standard used across most residential and commercial joinery. E0 boards have roughly half the emission level of E1 and are increasingly specified on Green Star-rated commercial projects, healthcare facilities, and schools. When quoting jobs that specify low-emission materials, confirm the required emission class early – E0 boards may have longer lead times than standard E1 stock.

Laminate and Surface Options

High-pressure laminates (HPL) are the most durable surface option for benchtops and high-wear door faces – scratch-resistant, UV-stable, and available in hundreds of colours and woodgrain finishes. Melamine-faced boards suit internal carcass components and vertical surfaces where cost matters. For premium finishes, decorative plywood and timber veneer on MDF substrates deliver a natural timber aesthetic for architectural joinery. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between MDF and particleboard for kitchen cabinets?

MDF is denser with a uniform fibre structure, making it the preferred substrate for cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and any component that will be routed, painted, or wrapped. Particleboard is lighter, more cost-effective, and commonly used for carcasses, shelving, and internal cabinet components. Most Australian kitchen manufacturers use particleboard carcasses with MDF doors – it balances performance and cost across the cabinet system.

Do I need moisture resistant MDF for kitchen cabinets?

For any cabinet component in a kitchen, bathroom, or laundry, moisture-resistant substrates are strongly recommended. Standard MDF and particleboard will swell at exposed edges when subject to humidity or water contact. MR MDF and HMR particleboard use moisture-resistant resins that significantly reduce this risk. Standard boards are acceptable for dry environments like bedrooms, offices, and living areas.

What does E0 formaldehyde rating mean for MDF?

E0 is a formaldehyde emission class tested under AS/NZS 4266, with a limit of 0.5 mg/L – roughly half the emission level of E1 (1.0 mg/L). E0 boards are specified where indoor air quality is a priority, including Green Star-rated commercial fitouts, healthcare facilities, schools, and childcare centres. Most Australian-made MDF is available in both E1 and E0 grades.

What thickness MDF should I use for cabinet doors?

16mm and 18mm are the standard thicknesses for cabinet doors in Australian joinery. 18mm is preferred for larger doors and where hardware requires deeper screw engagement. For routed Shaker-style profiles or 2-pac painted finishes, MDF provides a smoother result than particleboard. Benchtop substrates are typically 33mm HMR particleboard.
