What is the main Formwork LVL manufacturing standard?

All genuine structural Formwork LVL in Australia is manufactured to AS/NZS 4357 (Structural Laminated Veneer Lumber), with quality control independently third-party audited and certified — Big River’s e-form and TruFORM are both EWPAA-certified to that standard. Before anything else, confirm the LVL you’re buying is AS/NZS 4357 certified. Uncertified or imported look-alikes can’t guarantee consistent structural properties, and as with formply, the installer carries the risk if a compliance claim can’t be backed with evidence.

What to look out for - a practical checklist

1. Load capacity and stiffness (the E-rating and section). LVL is used as bearers, joists, soldiers and walers — members carrying the full wet-concrete load. The two things that drive performance are the grade/modulus (LVL formwork beams are chosen for being among the highest load-bearing available) and the section depth. Deeper beams span further and deflect less. Never just eyeball this: match the beam to the load, span and spacing using the manufacturer’s span tables for your design. Achievable spans change with depth, load and spacing, so the table is the deciding document, not a rule of thumb.

2. Deflection control. For formwork, stiffness often matters more than raw strength — excess deflection between supports puts sag and steps into your slab soffit. Size the member to the deflection limit in the span table, not just the strength limit.

3. The moisture-repellent coating — this is the big one for formwork LVL. This is what separates purpose-built formwork LVL from ordinary structural LVL. Formwork lives in a wet, alkaline, corrosive environment (fresh concrete, bleed water, repeated pours). Look for a high wax-loaded moisture-repellent coating (Wesbeam e-form is built exactly this way). The high wax loading improves dimensional stability, stops the beam drinking up water and moving, and extends service life — which is what makes it cost-effective over many reuses. A coating that’s too light means swelling, bowing and a short working life.

Straight bearers and joists give you a true, flat form and a clean soffit; they also need fewer props and less packing to bring level.

5. Durability / hazard treatment for the environment. Check whether the application needs a treatment level (e.g. H2-S, H3) for termite or moisture exposure, particularly for beams that may sit in damp or ground-contact conditions or get long reuse cycles.

6. On-site identification and handling.
