How to Choose the Right Cladding Accessories
Start with the cladding system you're installing, not the accessory catalogue - every board and panel manufacturer specifies a particular flashing profile, jointing strip or fixing pattern to keep their warranty valid, so match accessories to the system first.
For horizontal and vertical joints, jointing strips and cover battens manage differential movement between boards while keeping water out; the correct profile depends on whether you're running a flush-set, shiplap or exposed-joint finish.
For window, door and roof junctions, flashings are the single most important compliance item on the job - incorrect or missing flashing at these penetrations is one of the most common causes of water ingress claims in cladding installations, regardless of the board material used.
For fixings, corrosion resistance needs to match the environment: standard fixings are adequate inland, but coastal and marine environments (generally within 1km of breaking surf) require Class 4 corrosion-resistant fixings as a minimum, and some coastal councils mandate stainless steel.
For sealants, use a paintable, low-modulus, neutral-cure sealant compatible with the specific cladding substrate - some sealants attack fibre cement coatings or AAC surfaces if mismatched.

Cladding accessories are used on every external cladding job, across residential, multi-residential and commercial construction. Flashings are required wherever cladding meets a window, door, roofline, deck or another cladding type.
Jointing strips and control joints are used along horizontal and vertical board or panel joins to manage movement and keep water out. Corrosion-resistant fixings are specified based on distance from the coast, per AS 3959 and the relevant cladding manufacturer’s corrosion category tables.
Sealants are used at all penetrations and terminations to complete the weatherproofing envelope. On bushfire-prone sites, accessory selection (fixings, flashings and any exposed metal components) also needs to meet the BAL rating for the property.
