GUIDE

How to Choose the Right Render

For non-combustible external walls - including BAL-rated bushfire sites and Class 2+ multi-residential buildings where non-combustibility is a code requirement - Unitex® Beach Render, Harbour Fine™ and Redi Render™ are certified Non-Combustible and fully compliant with AS 1530.1.

For application over brick and block work, Beach Render and Harbour Fine™ are specifically designed for clean brickwork and blockwork substrates, with Harbour Fine™ available as a fine grade suited to sponge finishing.

For uneven surfaces or higher-build requirements, HiLite Render™ is suited to all high and very high-build applications, useful where the substrate needs additional levelling before the finish coat.

For decorative texture finishes, Uni-Trowel Décor™ 333 delivers a fine sand finish from the Applied Texture Finishes range, giving a traditional trowel-applied render aesthetic.

KEY BENEFITS

Why Specify Render?

Non-Combustible & Fire Compliant

Several products in the range are certified Non-Combustible and fully compliant with AS 1530.1, supporting compliance on bushfire-prone sites and multi-residential projects where non-combustible external finishes are required.

Weatherproofing

A correctly applied render system protects the substrate beneath, whether AAC, masonry, block work or fibre cement, from moisture ingress, extending the working life of the wall system.

Design Flexibility

From fine sand and sponge finishes to high-build textures, render allows a consistent, seamless facade finish across large wall areas, with a wide range of achievable textures and, once painted, colours.

Durability

Cement-based render systems are built for long-term exterior exposure, holding their finish and protective qualities over the working life of the building with minimal maintenance beyond periodic repainting.

APPLICATIONS

Where Is Render Used?

Render is used extensively across residential and commercial construction as the finishing system over masonry, AAC panels, fibre cement sheeting and block work.

In Class 1 residential housing, render provides a seamless, modern facade finish over AAC systems such as MaxiWall or Helix, or over masonry veneer.

In bushfire-prone areas, non-combustible render systems support compliance where the external wall finish itself needs to be non-combustible.

In multi-residential and commercial projects, render offers a cost-effective way to achieve a large, uniform facade finish across the building envelope compared to other cladding-only systems.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is render used for?

Render is a cement-based finishing coat applied over substrates like AAC panels, masonry, block work or fibre cement to create a seamless, weatherproof and architecturally finished facade.

Is render fire resistant?

Several products in Big River’s render range, including Unitex® Beach Render, Harbour Fine™ and Redi Render™ – are certified Non-Combustible and fully compliant with AS 1530.1, making them suitable for projects requiring a non-combustible external wall finish, such as bushfire-prone sites and certain multi-residential buildings.

Can render be applied over AAC panels?

Yes, render is a common finish over AAC systems such as MaxiWall and Helix. Confirm the specific render product’s compatibility with AAC substrates and follow the manufacturer’s application specification, including any required base coats or reinforcing mesh.

What's the difference between the render finishes in the range?

The range covers different textures and build requirements,  Uni-Trowel Décor™ 333 gives a fine sand finish, Harbour Fine™ suits sponge finishing over brick/block work, HiLite Render™ suits high-build applications over uneven surfaces, and Beach Render and Redi Render™ are general-purpose non-combustible options.

Does render need to be painted?

Most render systems can be finished with an acrylic or masonry paint system once fully cured, and some render finishes (depending on the product and pigment) can also be left as a tinted, self-coloured finish – check the specific product’s technical data sheet for painting and curing requirements.
