How to Choose the Right Interior Fixtures
Choosing the Right Material
Finger-jointed (FJ) primed pine is the standard for most new residential builds – it’s dimensionally stable, takes paint cleanly, and arrives pre-primed to save site time. MDF mouldings offer a smoother machined profile at a lower cost, suited to painted finishes in dry interior areas, though they’re less forgiving on impact than timber. For renovation or heritage work where a clear or stained finish is required, solid hardwood profiles in Tasmanian Oak, Pacific Maple, or similar species deliver the natural grain and durability the job demands.
Sizing Skirting and Architraves
Skirting height should be proportional to ceiling height. For standard 2.4m ceilings, 67–90mm skirting is typical. At 2.7m, 90–135mm provides better visual balance, and rooms with 3m-plus ceilings suit 185mm and above. Architrave width is generally sized to complement the skirting – matching the profile design in a narrower dimension keeps the trim consistent across the room. Door jamb width must match the wall thickness: 90mm stud plus plasterboard both sides gives a finished wall of approximately 110–116mm.
Pre-Primed vs Raw
Pre-primed mouldings are factory-coated with a primer and sanded, arriving ready for a final paint coat after installation. This eliminates an entire preparation step on site and is now the default for most volume residential work. Raw timber is the right choice when a stained, oiled, or clear-coated finish is specified – the primer would prevent the timber grain from showing through. Your Big River location stocks both options across the most common profiles and sizes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use timber or MDF for skirting boards?
Finger-jointed primed pine is the preferred choice for most residential builds – it’s more impact-resistant than MDF, holds fixings better, and is less prone to moisture damage at floor level. MDF is a cost-effective alternative for painted finishes in dry, low-traffic areas. For high-traffic zones, wet-adjacent rooms, or anywhere the skirting is likely to take knocks from furniture or vacuum cleaners, timber is the more durable option.
What size skirting board should I use for 2.7m ceilings?
For 2.7m ceilings, skirting heights of 90–135mm provide good visual proportion. Architraves are typically sized to complement the skirting – a 90mm architrave pairs well with 135–185mm skirting. These are guidelines rather than rules; the final choice also depends on the interior style, with heritage builds often using taller profiles and modern builds favouring slimmer, simpler lines.
What is the difference between primed and unprimed mouldings?
Pre-primed mouldings have a factory-applied primer coat that is sanded smooth before dispatch, meaning they only need a final paint coat after installation. This saves significant preparation time on site. Unprimed or raw mouldings are supplied without any coating and are the correct choice when a stained, oiled, or clear finish is specified, as the primer would prevent timber grain from showing through.
What door jamb width do I need for standard wall framing?
The jamb width must match the finished wall thickness. A standard 90mm timber stud with 10mm plasterboard on each side gives a finished wall of approximately 110mm, so a 110mm or 116mm jamb is typical. For 70mm steel stud framing or thicker wall assemblies with insulation or additional linings, measure the actual wall thickness before ordering jambs. Most suppliers stock common widths from 90mm through to 165mm.
