GUIDE

How to Choose the Right Structural Flooring

Particleboard or Plywood

Particleboard sheet flooring is the most common structural subfloor in Australian homes. It is made to AS/NZS 1860.1, and our range includes yellow tongue flooring and EnduraFloor by Laminex. For floors that carry highly concentrated loads, such as commercial and industrial floors, T&G structural plywood is available in 15, 17, 19, 21 and 25mm.

Thickness and Joist Spacing

Particleboard flooring comes in 19mm, 22mm and 25mm, and the colour of the tongue shows the thickness. Each brand uses its own colours: STRUCTAflor uses yellow for 19mm, red for 22mm and blue for 25mm, and Laminex uses green for 19mm, beige for 22mm and brown for 25mm. 19mm suits floor joists at up to 450mm centres, 22mm suits joists at up to 600mm centres, and 25mm is made for commercial floors. 19mm particleboard flooring is commonly called yellow tongue flooring, after the STRUCTAflor colour. Check with your local Big River location for the brands and thicknesses in stock, and confirm the span capacity for your framing before ordering.

Wet Areas and Tiled Floors

Particleboard flooring is moisture-resistant, not waterproof. In bathrooms, laundries and toilets it can be used beneath an impervious floor surface, provided the floor is waterproofed to AS 3740. For tiled balconies and tiled internal wet-area floors, Hardie Panel compressed sheet is a durable alternative to particleboard and plywood, and ceramic tile underlays from Hardie and Innova go over timber, particleboard and plywood floors as a base for ceramic tiles.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness particleboard flooring do I need for 600mm joist spacing?

Use 22mm particleboard flooring for joists at up to 600mm centres. Its tongue is red in the STRUCTAflor range and beige in the Laminex range. 19mm sheet, commonly called yellow tongue flooring, suits joists at up to 450mm centres; its tongue is yellow in the STRUCTAflor range and green in the Laminex range. Check with your local Big River location for the brands in stock, and confirm the span capacity for your framing before ordering.

Can particleboard flooring be used in wet areas like bathrooms?

Yes, beneath an impervious surface, provided the floor is waterproofed to AS 3740. The particleboard is the structural base, not the waterproof layer. For tiled wet-area floors, compressed fibre cement such as Hardie Panel is an alternative substrate.
