ArmourFloor® is the only engineered hardwood flooring still manufactured in Australia.
Produced exclusively at Big River Group’s Grafton facility in New South Wales, every board is engineered from five layers of Australian eucalypt hardwood – with each layer’s grain aligned at right-angles to the next. This cross-ply construction creates extraordinary dimensional stability, delivering greater resistance to shrinkage, cupping and gapping than solid timber in every practical measure, while retaining the genuine warmth and beauty of forest-grown Australian hardwood.
All ArmourFloor® boards are milled from managed regrowth and plantation forest hardwoods, and Big River Group holds Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) Chain of Custody certification across its engineered flooring range.
Supplied raw and completely uncoated, ArmourFloor® is sanded and finished on-site as a traditional timber floor – giving builders, designers and homeowners full control over the final colour, sheen and coating type. Water-based, solvent-based, oil and wax floor coatings are all compatible. Available in board widths of 138mm and 189mm, with lengths from 1700mm up to 2400mm (subject to availability). Engineered flooring packs delivered to site always include 40% random lengths to assist with efficient floor layout.
Unlike solid timber flooring, ArmourFloor® offers a number of practical advantages on site and in performance:
- Can be directly adhered to concrete – no plywood underlay required
- No on-site acclimatisation required
- No face fixing required at 138mm or 189mm board widths
- Remains stable in air-conditioned environments, over heated slabs and adjacent to patio doors and floor-to-ceiling glazing
- Backed by a lifetime structural warranty – no unsightly gaps

Frequently Asked Questions
How is AmourFloor made?
Every board is manufactured from five layers of Australian eucalypt hardwood, with each layer’s grain aligned at right-angles to the next. This cross-ply construction creates extraordinary dimensional stability and is produced exclusively at Big River Group’s Grafton, NSW facility – making ArmourFloor® the only engineered hardwood floor still manufactured in Australia.
What are the difference between solid hardwood timber flooring?
Unlike solid timber flooring, Engineered Overlay:
- Can be directly stuck to concrete floors
- Does NOT require on-site acclimatisation
- Does NOT requires face fixing at 138mm or 189mm widths
- Comes with a 25-year stability warranty – NO unsightly gaps
What sizes are the flooring lengths?
ArmourFloor® is available in 138mm and 189mm board widths. Lengths range from 1700mm to 2400mm, supplied as random lengths – packs include 40% shorter lengths to assist with efficient floor layout and reduce waste. Thickness is 14mm throughout.
What coatings or finishes can be applied?
ArmourFloor® is supplied raw and completely uncoated. Water-based, solvent-based, oil and wax floor coatings can all be applied. Because the floor is finished on-site, you have complete control over the final colour, sheen level and coating type.
Can ArmourFloor® be installed over a heated slab?
Yes. ArmourFloor® is specifically approved for use over heated in-slab hydronic systems. Its cross-ply construction ensures it remains stable under the temperature cycling associated with heated floors, where solid timber would typically move and gap.
Is ArmourFloor® suitable for commercial applications?
Yes. ArmourFloor® is rated for residential and medium commercial flooring applications. With a Group 3 fire rating (walls and ceilings) make it suitable for offices, showrooms, boutiques and hospitality spaces.
Does ArmourFloor® require acclimatisation before installation?
No. Unlike solid timber flooring, ArmourFloor® does not require on-site acclimatisation. Boards can be installed immediately on arrival to site, reducing project downtime and simplifying the installation schedule.
I switched to Big River for cladding and flooring last year and haven't looked back. The trade account makes ordering easy, the credit terms are fair, and their tech team helped me spec the right product for a tricky coastal project. Highly recommend.
